Spelling words

Maddie just got home from school. Since we are going trick-or-treating tonight I thought I would check to see if she has any homework she needs to get started on. Every week they have spelling words, usually about 8.

Today she came home with 16 spelling words. SIXTEEN! And they are not just easy little words. Keep in mind that she is in FIRST GRADE. Granted she is gifted and talented (just like her parents!) but this list is insane. Check it out!

1. SCRATCHED
2. RAPPED
3. LISTENED
4. HISSED
5. ASSIGNED
6. YELLED
7. MISSED
8. REFUSED
9. WORKED
10. SQUIRMED
11. LOADED
12. GIGGLED
13. HAPPENED
14. WHISPERED
15. ANSWERED
16. WHIZZED

I am exhausted just typing those words out. Better hand this list off to Maddie so she can get started!

I know just how you feel, Sarah. So often, our kids are not able to be "kids." They're expected to be "little adults." I'd better not get started on that whole thing.... You'd think I had morphed into the wicked witch!

Hope you're having fun trick and treating!

There's always homeschooling... You'd know the teacher isn't just giving the kids busy work, 'cause that would be more work for her! Well, sorry, but I can't see that one. I'm sure you're not the only one aghast at the spelling word challenge! But Maddie will, no doubt, rise to the challenge.

Are you kidding! That is absurd. My engineer husband with three masters degrees couldn't spell half those words (and if he could spell them, he'd make typos!)

Why do they do that to children? There's just not enough hours in a day to concentrate on such trivial matters as first graders trying to memorize words adults can't spell.
